Alluring Zircon - Holiday or Birthday Gift

Zircon is the birthstone for December. It would also make a very special holiday surprise.

Zircon occurs in an array of colors. Its wide and varied palette of yellow, green, red, reddish brown, and blue hues makes it a favorite among collectors as well as informed consumers. At Richard Dolgin Private Jeweler, we predominately use blue zircon as it is our favorite color gemstone. Most of the zircon we use comes from a distributor who sources the rough gemstone in Cambodia and it is polished and cut in his factory in Thailand.

Blue zircon

As with many color gemstones, blue zircon has a fascinating history and lore. Zircon is the oldest mineral on earth - dating back 4.4 billion years. In the Middle Ages zircon was thought to help with sleep, wisdom and vanquishing evil spirits. Scholars think the stone’s name comes from the Arabic word zarkun, meaning “cinnabar” or “vermilion.” Others believe the source is the Persian word zargun, or “gold colored.” Considering zircon’s color range, either derivation seems possible. Blue zircon was popular in Victorian era jewelry and is often featured in English estate jewelry dating from the 1880s.

Zircon can be cut into a variety of shapes including oval, emerald cut, pear shape, and round. Many times it is uniquely faceted, adding to it's brilliance. I particularly enjoy blue zircon because it reminds me of the color of the Caribbean Ocean. Looking at the stone can almost hypnotize me giving me happy thoughts that I am laying on the beach watching the ocean. Here are a number of pieces that we have in stock ready to deliver for a special holiday gift or December birthday.

Whether for a December birthday or a spectacular holiday gift, you should consider blue zircon for its stunning beauty and unique qualities. Stop by Richard Dolgin Private Jeweler to see our collection of blue zircon custom crafted jewelry while it lasts.
