Purple gemstone are one of my favorite type of color stones to work with. They have such a regal appearance and make a vivid fashion statement.
February's birthstone is amethyst. It is definitely one of our favorites to do jewelry designs with. Amethyst come in many different shades of purple from a light lilac to deep purple. A true amethyst gemstone has a deep purple hue with lighter tones of purple fluorescing through the stone. Amethyst are cut in many different shapes which allow many different designs. The variety of shapes including oval, pear shape, round, trilliant and emerald cut gives you the opportunity to be creative with your custom jewelry design.
Amethyst is the most valuable quartz variety and was as expensive as ruby until the 19th century when large deposits were found in Brazil. While primarily mined in Brazil amethyst are also found in Zambia and the Southwest United States.
Amethyst has an interesting history. St. Valentine, the patron of romantic love is said to have worn an amethyst ring carved with the image of Cupid. Camillo Leonardi, the astrologer, wrote that he believed amethyst could improve intelligence and gets rid of evil thoughts. Greek legends associated amethyst with the god of wine, Bacchus. They also believed wearing amethyst kept its wearer clear-headed and quick in battle. Many people believe amethyst has healing properties.
