Fiery Rubies To Go Along With the Heat of Summer

The beautiful, fiery red ruby is the spectacular birthstone for July.

Rubies are a member of the same mineral species as sapphires. That mineral species is called corundum. Though rubies are known for their red color, the range of red hues is quite remarkable in rubies. Colors can actually range from such a light red it appears pink to a deep blood red. The darkest red rubies are called pigeon blood red. Rubies are mined around the world in locations such as Tanzania, Afghanistan, India and Thailand. Some of the finest rubies in the world come from the legendary mines of Mogok in the valley of rubies in Myanmar.

Ruby is one of the most historically significant colored stones. Rubies are mentioned four times in the Bible, in association with attributes like beauty and wisdom. In the ancient language of Sanskrit, ruby is called ratnaraj, or “king of precious stones.”

Rubies make a wonderful jewelry centerpiece because they are highly durable. Durability of gemstones is measured on the Mohs hardness scale. The hardest gemstone is of course a diamond, which earns a Mohs hardness rating of 10.0. Rubies are not far behind with a Mohs hardness rating of 9.0. Therefore owners of jewelry containing rubies can be assured it will wear well for jewelry worn daily.

Rubies are the most valued colored gemstone, garnering the highest price per carat of them all. Similar to diamonds, rubies are graded using the 4Cs – color, cut, clarity and carat weight. When grading rubies, color is the most important element when it comes to pricing and valuation. In May of 2015 a new record was set  at auction for a colored gemstone. A 25.59-carat ruby ring sold for $1,266,901 per carat, for a grand total of 32.4 million dollars.

We have designed many beautiful pieces of jewelry with rubies included as the main centerpiece. Because of their hardness they can be worn on a daily basis and complement many designs and personalities. Rubies are cut in all shapes and sizes so you can be very creative in the design aspects using this wonderful gemstone. We have created many rings, bracelets, earrings and pendants using ruby as the centerpiece. In my career, I don't think I can remember any client having a problem with ruby jewelry in regards to breakage or wear. I am always in the pursuit of finding a luscious red ruby to use in a piece of jewelry as a piece of art. We are very particular about the rubies we buy, making sure that they are not treated or infused. Small rubies also can complement other gemstones such as diamonds using them as adornments. Here is a gallery of some of the ruby pieces of jewelry we have crafted and sold over the last few years. If you are in the area and would like to see our latest ruby creation, stop in. We are always looking and adding beautiful ruby jewelry pieces to our collection.
