In addition to being formed deep in the Earth, some peridot actually originate from meteorites. In 2005, peridot was found in comet dust brought back from the Stardust robotic space probe. Peridot is mined in the United States, China, Vietnam, Finland, Pakistan, Myanmar, and the island of Zabargad. Peridot is the gem variety of the mineral olivine. Ancient Egyptians mined peridot and in their lore it was believed to protect wearers against terrors of the night. According the the GIA website:
Some historians believe that Cleopatra’s famous emerald collection might actually have been peridot. People in medieval times continued to confuse peridot with emerald.
We have had the opportunity to custom craft jewelry pieces with peridot in the past and look forward to our next peridot project. Here are some images of beautiful jewelry featuring the peridot gemstone.
