I understand the appeal. There are two scenarios I commonly see. First, you just received a beautiful ring and want it fitting just right. Second, you procrastinated, and then decided to wear a particular ring and need it quickly. I have found myself in similar circumstances with our accessories. The strong attachment to a cherished object means I want to limit the amount of time I am separated from it. Likewise, I need to wear a piece that evening, so the sense of urgency is there.
Some jewelers offer ring resizing in an hour or while you wait or same-day. This service accommodates the scenarios above. However, I am strongly against it and do not offer it and suggest against it.
Two Reasons To Avoid Same Day Or While You Wait Ring Resizings
The rational is simple. Quality ring sizings take longer than a day. Our process takes a minimum of two days. The first day we thoroughly clean the ring. Before working on any piece of jewelry, it needs to be cleaned completely. Grim can be liability when welding and leads to imperfect work. It also decreases the strength of solders and causes porosity or weak spots in the welds. The actually work begins the following day. There exact process depends on the nature of the ring. Most rings are cut. Metal is removed or added with a weld. The final part of the process is refinishing including polishing and rhodium plating if necessary. This finishing phase is what ensures you will never know that we resized your ring. It is important and often is completed on the third day.
Besides the time involved, there is another reason why I do not offer same day or while you wait or one hour ring resizings: my shop is too busy. Marsha and I both work hard and have reputation for quality work. We complete the work in the order in which it arrives in fairness to all our clients. Normal sizings take us about five business days.
Another important point that so many jewelers chose to ignore. Making a ring especially those more intricate rings with diamonds in the shank or halos should be made in the correct size. The ring will wear much better and the likelihood of losing diamonds goes down significantly. Solitaire and simple bands are resize better thanks the laser welder, but a die struck solitaire may lose some integrity if resized improperly. With that said, we resize rings everyday and seldom does it present problems.
